Abortion

Why would someone consider abortion? The reasons are often rooted in dreams and hopes for themselves and their child. Many women facing unplanned pregnancies feel as though the most honorable decision they can make is abortion because of current life circumstances, whether that be poverty, lack of support, unstable environments, young age, or other reasons. We understand these reasons are very personal to each and every woman. The reality is that many women are in the middle of circumstances that are not ideal for parenting, and they acknowledge this.

Many women feel as though abortion is the only way to prevent their child and themselves from suffering from the weight of current circumstances. However, these reasons for choosing abortion can be answered with a lifelong plan for the baby and birth mother — Adoption.

The majority of women choose abortion because of one or more of these reasons:

  • Having a child would interfere with a woman’s education, work or ability to care for dependents (74%)
  • Having a baby is unaffordable/or a woman is facing financial hardship (73%)
  • A woman did not want to be a single mother or was having relationship problems (48%)

It is strong and courageous for a woman to be able to look at and assess a current situation and acknowledge that she may not be in the best place to parent a child at this time in her life. We know this decision is not made lightly and is motivated ultimately by love.

If you are expecting a child, our hope is that you hear that you and your child are made in the image of God and have infinite value. We want you to know that you are not left with only two options, abortion or parenting. Rather, there is another option that is available to you that can satisfy the outcome you may be seeking, but one that is a life-giving, loving alternative in the form of adoption.

Parenting

Lifeline recognizes that parenting is a life-giving, honorable, viable option for many women facing an unplanned pregnancy. As you consider adoption and parenting, your pregnancy counselor will encourage you to further explore the various parenting resources available to you.

You have a lot to consider as you explore the option of parenting, which is life-changing and requires a lifelong commitment and careful dedication. This decision could be the best option for both you and your child.

If you do choose to parent, our counselors want to support you in your decision and help connect you with resources that will set you and your child up for long-term success.

Adoption

A good mother makes a plan for her child. If you are in a place where you see that you might not be ready to parent in a way that provides the best care for your child, evaluating other options is wise.

You may be concerned about your emotional readiness to parent. Or about the stability of your relationships, or the relationship with the baby’s father. You may be worried about your financial situation or physical circumstances, or unfulfilled goals (like education or career). Even so, adoption could be a great option for both you and your child. It is an option that allows you to give your child the greatest gift — life. And it allows you to plan for your child’s best interest and for your own.

At Lifeline, we want YOU to be able to make the plan while we walk alongside you in love and support. Our pregnancy counselors and our prospective adoptive families desire to honor and support you as you plan for your child’s future.

There are many ideas about adoption that may be misleading. You may have heard that adoption is giving up, being irresponsible, or unloving toward your child. We believe these things are not true. We believe adoption is a choice that is life-giving, responsible, and loving. It takes great courage and sacrifice to look beyond yourself for the good of another.

Making an adoption plan for your child will not be easy, but neither will any pregnancy option. Separation after carrying a baby for nine months will be painful and involve loss and grief. But the adoption journey is one that holds great hope. You can feel empowered by knowing you made a responsible, loving decision for your child. Healing takes strength and courage, and post-adoption counseling is highly recommended and available to you.

As you evaluate your options, allow your choice to be based on the long-term care of your child, not just the immediate. Emotional support from the people close to you is a good thing, but ultimately this is your child and your choice to make. Let the long-term wellbeing of your child be the highest priority.
